Northern Colorado Volleyball defeated Colorado in five sets to snap a 4-game losing streak to the Buffs

The Northern Colorado volleyball team picked up a major win Wednesday night as the Bears defeated the University of Colorado in five sets, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Buffs.

Senior middle blocker Maddie Davies led the Bears offense with a career-best 22 kills at the CU Events Center in Boulder.

UNC (6-2) won the match 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 22-25 and 15-8 to move to 6-5 all-time in the series between the teams.

Sophomore outside hitter Gabi Placide tied a career-high with 16 kills, junior middle hitter Isabel Bennett added 15 digs and outside hitter Alayna Tessena had 12 digs. UNC had 20 kills in the first set of the match.

Fifth-year setter Syd Cole had 64 of UNC’s 71 assists, allowing the Bears to convert 48.5 percent of Cole’s sets against the Buffs.

The win was UNC’s third this season against a Division I opponent from a Power 4 conference. The Bears defeated Michigan State of the Big Ten Conference in their first game of the season. UNC also beat Mississippi late last week as part of the UNC Invitational at Bank of Colorado Arena. Ole Miss defeated UNC last Saturday in the final game of the invitational.

UNC’s next game is Friday at 2 p.m. against Air Force as part of the Mile High Classic hosted by the University of Denver at Hamilton Gym.

UNC will go for a series of Colorado teams on Saturday afternoon against Denver. The match starts at 15.00

UNC defeated Colorado 3-1 on September 3 in the third game of the season.

The Bears are scheduled for three games Sept. 19-21 at the Shocker Classic hosted by Wichita State. UNC returns home on Saturday, Sept. 28 for its Big Sky Conference opener against Idaho State. The game starts at 6pm at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley.
