“But my job, I think, is to reflect exactly what’s going on in Springfield,” DeWine said. “So the mayor is telling us and the police chief is telling us that there is no evidence of anyone eating a dog or any Haitian who would do such a thing. These Haitians who are there are legal. They work very, very hard. I met this morning with a number of business people who employ these Haitians and they tell me that they are really essential for them to get their job done.”

When pressed again by Brown to answer the question, DeWine eventually admitted that the city faces “challenges,” but did not place any blame for the city’s mass closings on the baseless accusations hurled by Trump and Vance.

“Look, I’m not here to lay blame,” DeWine said. “I’m here to say what we see on the ground. And look, there are challenges. We have 15,000 more people in a city of about 58,000.”
