Woodward athlete ‘shot wound’ at North College Hill football game: CPS

NORTH COLLEGE HILL, Ohio (WXIX) – A Woodward High School athlete was injured in a shooting during the school’s North College Hill football game, Cincinnati Public Schools said.

The shots rang out around 8:15 p.m., just 500 yards from the stadium behind the elementary school, according to NCH Superintendent Eugene Blalock. He said someone shot up the elementary school.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired and a report of a person walking with a bullet being taken into the middle school gymnasium.

“This evening, a Woodward Career Technical High School student-athlete was injured in a shooting during the school’s football game at North College Hill, Cincinnati Public School District said in a statement.

“Cincinnati Public Schools recognizes this tragic event and our support remains with the student, family, friends and school community. The CPS Crisis Response Team will be on site to provide support to students as they return to school on Tuesday.”

The game ended early and this will now be the last home game North College Hill will play this season, according to the NCH superintendent.

He said they had metal detectors at the game and banned outside masks and bags, but it still happened.

“There is no reason to have so many guns, guns, here on the street. Personally, as a parent, as an administrator, I would never blame a school for not wanting to come to North College Hill to play. Why would you?” Blalock said.

Police did not provide an update on the scene.

This comes two weeks after about 10 shots were fired near the football stadium, stopping North College Hill’s game against Cincinnati Country Day.

Officers said they evacuated the stadium of players and fans without incident and determined it was an isolated incident unrelated to the Sept. 6 game.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the decision has been made to cancel the remainder of the game,” police wrote on social media at the time.

North College Hill did not play the following week because their opponent, Miami Valley Christian Academy, would not go there.

However, tonight’s game went ahead as scheduled.

North College Hill City Schools and the North College Hill Police Department said in an earlier joint statement that the athletic department has taken appropriate precautions and procedures to ensure the safety of all who attend their sporting events.

In light of the Sept. 6 shooting incident at the North College Hill football game on Sept. 6, their upcoming home game against Summit Country Day School has been moved from a Friday night, Oct. 11, to on a Saturday morning, October 12th.

Now, with a student-athlete on the visiting team injured in a shooting at North College Hill, despite safety measures and assurances from police and the school that he would be safe, it’s unclear whether that game will keep happening.
