DPS, TxDOT officials discuss measures being taken for Loop 335 and Soncy crashes

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – There have been several crashes at the intersection of Loop 335 and Soncy, and now serious safety concerns have been raised after two died from a crash this week.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, there have been 23 crashes in the area of the loop and Soncy from January to July.

Since July, there have been several other crashes reported, resulting in multiple critical and serious injuries.

“We have worked several more crashes at that intersection since July that included injury, serious injury crashes, and as you know we just completed investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Tuesday resulting in the death of two people,” said Sgt. Cindy Barkley, public information officer for Texas DPS.

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently working on solutions to prevent further tragedies.

“We’re working with local law enforcement as well as DPS, sheriff’s office, police departments, because they’re the boots on the ground. They’re seeing what’s happening there and they have very valuable input; they probably have the best input you can give,” said Jason Britsch, public information officer for TxDOT.

Due to the number of crashes and traffic, there has been an increase in law enforcement monitoring the area.

“The number one priority is safety, so we have crews that are monitoring it right now. They’re looking at the numbers and they’re working with local law enforcement and kind of putting together an assessment of what further safety improvements can be put in that area to make it safer for the traveling public,” said Britsch.

Officials urge drivers to stay cautious and follow posted speed limits as crews work to make the intersection safer for all.
