Sheriff Eric Klang is asking for the public’s help in identifying the man who used a counterfeit $100 bill at the Garrison Holiday Station yesterday. He is described as late 20s, 6-2, about 180 pounds. He told the clerk that the note looked and felt funny “because it went to the wash.”

30 years ago (1994)

The Nisswa City Council approved a Paul Bunyan Trail plaque through the city, which runs about a mile from the south of the city to lower Cullen Lake. The Nisswa portion of the trail, formerly owned by BN Railroad, will be covered next year. The entire route stretches from Baxter to Bemidji.

40 years ago (1984)

What’s the future for Brainerd’s downtown stores? What does it take to keep downtown viable? How far will customers travel to shop there? Finding answers is the goal of Brainerd Improvement, Inc., which meets regularly under the leadership of Warren Williams, pres. and Bob Olson, VP.

According to a survey made by Homer Whiting, state forest supervisor here, the species of caterpillars found in the oaks in the vicinity of Gull Lake are not as dangerous as those found in other parts of the state. While the “red hump” caterpillar softens leaves and foliage, it does not kill oaks.

100 Years Ago (1924)

Dr. James Anderson, superintendent of the Deerwood Sanitarium says the radio fund has gone a step further and more than $650 is now on deposit in the bank. The donations will be used to purchase a central radio with headphones connected to each bed, rather than a loudspeaker, which is inappropriate for a hospital.
