Kansas City man accused of driving stolen car 120 mph on I-70

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) – A Kansas City man is facing charges after speeding and trying to outrun police.

Charles J. Weber, 36, is charged with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing.

According to a probable cause statement, an Independence police officer observed Wheeler driving a white Dodge Charger west on Interstate 70 around 2 a.m. on Sept. 18.

The document shows police clocked the car going 95 mph in a 65 mph zone.

The officer began following the car and reported that Weber accelerated to approximately 120 mph. The officer turned on his lights and siren, but Weber did not stop. The court document shows the officer stopped the pursuit because of the high speed.

Other officers placed road spikes near I-70 and Sterling Avenue. After hitting the spikes, the probable cause statement shows the car eventually came to rest at 43rd Terrace and the Blue Ridge Cutoff.

Weber and the other person inside the car then tried to run from police.

Weber and a woman were eventually arrested.

The probable cause statement shows the charger was stolen in Kansas City, Missouri.

Court documents show Weber has a history of arrests for theft, fleeing and eluding, traffic offenses, weapons charges, theft, drug possession and other offenses.

Weber is scheduled to be in court Wednesday.
