On the same day, the Tigers secured their first hitting streak since 2016, the White Sox surpassed the team’s 119-game losing streak since 2003.

While the Tigers are on their way to accomplishments the franchise hasn’t seen in a decade, an AL Central rival is doing them a favor by eliminating a dubious distinction.

The Chicago White Sox lost to the San Diego Padres 4-2 on Sunday to move their record to 36-120 on the season.

In doing so, they passed the 2003 Tigers for the most losses by an American League team, 119. Their 120 losses are tied with the 1962 Mets for the most in a modern season .

The White Sox have six games left in the regular season, but will fall short of the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (20-134) for most losses overall in a season.

Meanwhile, the Tigers won for the sixth time in their last seven games, 4-3 over the Orioles on Sunday. This victory guaranteed the club its first winning record since 2016 and moved into a tie with the Kansas City Royals for the final American League playoff spot, one game ahead of the Twins. The Tigers haven’t been to the playoffs since 2014.

The Tigers close the season with six home games, three against the Rays and three against the White Sox.
