Liverpool FC News Roundup: Players REACT to EAFC INTERVIEWS, Diaz and Slot

Here’s all the latest Liverpool FC news ahead of the weekend, with the Reds set to face Wolves in the Premier League.

Darwin Nunez reacts to the EAFC rating

Darwin Nuñez seems to have a hard time catching a break.

A run of 14 clean sheets was finally ended with a simply sublime 18-yard effort from the right of the penalty area off the far post against Bournemouth last weekend. And despite not scoring in his second consecutive start, he was given 90 minutes in Liverpool’s 5-1 League Cup win over West Ham.

But with the release of the video game EA FC 25 – the FIFA series that is no longer legally called – came another opportunity for comparison with its peers. And despite his 82 rating, he’s still not satisfied.

As can be seen in the video Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Alexis Mac Allister – Mate drink in hand – are doubts after Darwin jokes that his lower rating is because he spent “five out of seven games on the bench”. Even Darwin himself manages to crack a smile. Diaz’s game rating is 84, Jota’s 85 and Mac Allister’s 86, meaning Darwin is well below his boys. While it was certainly lip service, it’s clear that Darwin isn’t too happy with his current playing time under new manager Arne Slot.

Arne Slot in the form of Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz Liverpool 2024-25

Luis Diaz has been Liverpool’s best player so far this season.

The Colombian has already scored five goals in his first five Premier League games, on his way to a Premier League-high eight. This includes an opening brace in the 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Right foot, left foot, headers – the winger has emerged this season as seemingly the total package. Many have wondered how much new manager Arne Slot had to do with this rapid rise.

Asked about anything he worked on with Diaz in today’s pre-match press conference ahead of a trip to Molineux to face Wolves, Slot shared his thoughts on the player’s form.

Arne Slot hasn’t exactly hidden his tactical structures this season, but there has clearly been a change in the way Liverpool play.

This was critically reflected in the performances of some key players – none more so than Luis Diaz, who started the season in electric form. The Colombian winger has five goals in five games this season, taking his tally to eight, the most in the Premier League.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports ahead of this weekend’s trip to Wolves, Diaz spoke about his bright start and how new manager Slot has helped it.

The referee behind the WOAT VAR decision returns to Liverpool

Liverpool’s away game at Tottenham last season was one of the most controversial of the season.

Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside at 0-0 which, due to a serious miscommunication, led to the VAR realizing Diaz was in the game so the goal wouldn’t be disallowed on the day.

Tottenham won 2-1 that day. With Curtis Jones sent off before Diaz’s non-goal went in, who knows what the outcome would have been had the VAR call been implemented correctly.

Now Darren England – the VAR official on the day – will be involved in a Liverpool match for the first time since as he steps into the fourth official role for this weekend’s game against Wolves.

Slot set for first major test

Arne Slot enters his first real test as Liverpool head coach – or at least, that’s what the data says.

Opta analysts understand that Arne Slot is about to have his first real test as Liverpool head coach. They looked at every Premier League club’s fixture list and I think the Reds actually had the easiest the season begins.

That start saw Liverpool take on newly promoted Ipswich Town in their opener, before taking on Brentford, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth. United are the strongest team there, of course, but not one expected to challenge – in fact, the Reds have swept the floor with them.

The following five, however, are above average in difficulty. Wolves and Crystal Palace are next, both away from home. Then comes Chelsea at Anfield – a side with just one defeat this year – and then Arsenal away. This is one of the toughest games of the whole season, for sure.
