“Monstrous” road closures this weekend are impacting Western Washington travelers

Drivers in Western Washington should be aware and alert for numerous substantial road closures throughout the weekend.

The closures affecting those traveling across Lake Washington on State Route (SR) 520, north on Interstate 405, south on SR 167 or I-5 through the Tacoma, Fife and Federal Way areas began Friday night, the 27 September.

Below is a guide to this weekend’s closures:

The SR 520 Bridge Bridge and SR 520 will be closed in both directions between I-5 in Seattle and 92nd Ave NE from 11:00 PM Friday until 5:00 AM Monday. WSDOT will work on lighting and fire suppression under the new Montlake overpass over SR 520.

Both directions of Interstate 5 between SR 18 in Federal Way and 54th Ave E in Fife will close overnight on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28.

WSDOT said the northbound lanes will close until 10:30 p.m., and the southbound lanes will close until 11 p.m. Lanes will begin to open at 7:00 a.m. Saturday and fully reopen by 11:00 a.m. Lanes will begin reopening at 8:00 a.m. Sunday and are expected to fully reopen by noon.

WSDOT said the northbound Mercer Street and southbound I-5 ramps will also be closed this weekend from 10:00 p.m. Friday to 5:00 a.m. Monday.

Northbound I-405 will be closed from North Southport Drive/Sunset Boulevard Northeast (Exit 5) to Coal Creek Parkway Southeast from 11:00 PM Friday, September 27th and 4:00 AM Monday, September 30th.

The following entrance and exit ramps will also be closed:

  • Sunset Boulevard Northeast ramp to northbound I-405
  • Northeast 30th Street Entrance and Exit Ramps (Exit 6)
  • Northeast 44th Street Entrance and Exit Ramps (Exit 7)
  • Lake Washington Boulevard Southeast Entrance and Exit Ramps (Exit 8)
  • Coal Creek Parkway Southeast exit ramp (Exit 10)

WSDOT said a signed detour will guide people around the closure.

SR 167 southbound will be closed from SR 516 to South 277th Street in Kent from 11:59 PM Friday, September 27th until 4:00 AM Monday, September 30th.

The following entrance and exit ramps will also be closed:

  • SR 516 on ramp
  • South 277th Street exit ramp

WSDOT said a signed detour will guide people around the closure.

The Ballard Bridge will also be closed this weekend for maintenance and preservation work, which could cause backups and other delays.

The Seattle Department of Transportation said the bridge will be closed starting at 7 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
