Meet Randall Sweet, the new high school sports reporter for the Amarillo Globe-News

Hello Amarillo!

My name is Randall Sweet and I am the newest sports reporter for the Amarillo Globe-News.

I am excited to begin this journey covering high school sports in the Texas Panhandle and have already had a wonderful introduction to my new home. In my first week on the job, I was fortunate enough to cover a Canyon vs. Randall volleyball game, the weekly Canyon ISD vs. Amarillo ISD coaches lunch, and an exciting Sunray vs. Canadian football game.

I look forward to covering more events in the Amarillo area and being more present in all panhandle communities as I learn more about the area.

I was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Lubbock, where I attended Lubbock High School. During my four years at Western, I played football in addition to running and cross country, competing against many of the same programs and coaches that I do now.

After graduating from LHS in 2018, I enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. After spending more than a year working in the OU athletics department, I anchored OU’s regular television news, OU Nightly, and the school’s weekly sports show, Sooner Sports Pad, before landing at OU Daily, Oklahoma’s independent, student-run newspaper. .

As a sports reporter for the OU Daily, I covered Sooners golf, wrestling and softball, chronicling Oklahoma’s 2022 national championship softball team. I also covered local high school sports as a freelance writer for The Norman Transcript, receiving the first my taste of professional reporting.

After graduating from OU’s Gaylord College in May 2022, I worked for Visit Oklahoma City as a communications coordinator, promoting OKC through my written work. After contributing to the OKC Thunder on SI during my time at Visit OKC, I joined the Sooners on SI team as a full-time reporter and videographer, once again covering OU sports.

In my role with the Sooners on SI, I traveled to Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Orlando and many other destinations to provide comprehensive coverage of Oklahoma athletics. I plan to bring that same effort, passion and work ethic to my coverage of Amarillo area high school sports.

There are so many incredible stories to tell in Texas and I’m excited to continue learning more about the great people of this area.

If you have stories to tell, feel free to email [email protected] or hit me up on X (@RandallSweet5). I look forward to meeting everyone, so if you see me at a game or event or even at the grocery store, stop by and say hi!
