He pleaded not guilty at the Supreme Court hearing

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – A man accused of killing another young man on the University of Arizona volleyball court made his first appearance in Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The arraignment of 20-year-old Ryan Romero Encinas formally notifies Encinas of the charges against him and sets the stage for further developments in the case.

Encinas is being held in jail on $1 million bail.

The judge pleaded guilty to Encinas’ guilt. This is standard at this early stage of the case. Encinas will hold a case management conference next month and a pretrial hearing in December.

Witnesses say that on September 22, Encinas was on the volleyball court on the U of A campus when a fight broke out with 19-year-old Minhaj Jamshidi. Investigators say Encinas pulled out a gun, shot Jamshidi and fled. Emergency services tried to save Jamshidi’s life but failed.

Neither man was a student at the U of A. Jamshidi was a student at Pima Community College.

U of A police have promised better security on campus since the shooting.
