Norwich Fire Department responds to fatal house fire on Summit St: What happened

A 7-year-old girl who was in a critical condition has died after being rescued from a house fire by Norwich Fire Department on Tuesday.

According to a news release issued by the Norwich Police Department, the city’s dispatch center received multiple 911 calls reporting a large fire at a two-story home at 83 Summit St. shortly before 5:30 p.m. The callers reported that a child was trapped in the house. .

Norwich Police Department officers and the Norwich Fire Department arrived on scene and found the residence fully engulfed in flames. The Norwich Fire Department managed to enter the home and rescue the girl from the second floor of the residence.

The minor was transported to Backus Hospital for medical attention, where she was pronounced dead.

Additional assistance at the scene was provided by the Yantic Fire Department, the East Great Plain Fire Department and the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department’s FAST team.

The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal and the Norwich City Police and Fire Departments to see if it was a fatal fire.

Bereavement counselors will be available at Norwich Schools on Wednesday for anyone who needs help.
