Colorado Governor’s Office: Many people were trapped and rescued in the Mollie Kathleen gold mine

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) – The Teller County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) is responding to what it calls a major incident at the Mollie Kathleen gold mine near Cripple Creek.

Teller County commissioners confirm they have been on the phone with the governor, who is sending “resources.”

The Teller County Office of Emergency Management is also responding to the scene.

TCSO says the incident occurred due to equipment failure. The mine did not collapse.

TCSO is expected to hold a press conference later today regarding the incident. You can watch it above.

A source briefed in the governor’s office told the ABC that many people were still trapped and many had been rescued. Active search and rescue operations are ongoing.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is providing mutual aid assistance. Heavy Rescue Units 17, Collapse 17, Municipal Services 17, Battalion Chiefs 1 and 4, and High Angle Rescue Units 5 and 13 all respond from CSFD. CSFD reports it is working on multiple rescues.

The KRDO13 crew is on its way. This is a developing story.

The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine is an old gold mine on the outskirts of Cripple Creek where people can now pay to tour the underground mine.
