Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have recalled nearly 1.7 million passenger cars and SUVs in the United States over a steering problem that could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 1,693,199 2022-2025 Honda vehicles. This includes some types of the following models:

  • Honda Civic
  • Honda Civic Type R
  • Honda CR-V
  • Honda HR-V
  • Acura Integra
  • Acura Integra Type S

According to the NHTSA report, the recall is due to an improperly manufactured worm wheel in the steering gearbox causing excessive internal friction in the vehicles. Friction can cause a “sticky” feeling when you turn the steering wheel.

“Increased friction between the worm gear and the worm wheel can increase steering effort and difficulty and increase the risk of accident or injury,” according to the NHTSA report.

Honda received the first complaint about this issue in September 2021. NHTSA initiated an initial investigation in March 2023.

Honda said it had received 10,328 warranty claims as of September 2021.
