A police search is underway for a man who went missing after a rowboat capsized on the Thames.

Surrey Police said emergency services were called to Sunbury Lock in Sunbury-on-Thames at around 8.50am on Friday.

Five other adults were rescued after the boat capsized, but a 60-year-old man is still missing this morning.

Weybridge Rowing Club confirmed it was one of their boats that “got into trouble following an incident on the water”.

A statement said: “The club is working closely with the emergency services, police, the Environment Agency and other agencies to help search for the missing person and investigate the events that took place yesterday.”

An ambulance spokesman said three of the rescued people were taken to hospital for further tests.

Rescue teams urged residents to avoid the area while they searched.

In an update, Surrey Police said: “The search continues today for a man who was on a rowing boat that capsized yesterday morning.

“Yesterday morning, along with other emergency services, we were called to Sunbury Lock near Wheatleys Eyot at around 8.50am following reports that six adults had entered the water.

“Five of these people have been found, but a 60-year-old man is still missing.”

Police say they are investigating how the boat capsized.

There was a red warning on the river for fast-flowing waters and “strong currents,” according to reports.

A spokesman for the force added: “Sadly, we believe there may still be a man in his 60s in the river.

“His relatives have been informed and are being kept informed.”

Chief Inspector of North Surrey, Andy Jenkins said; “This is a very distressing time for everyone involved and we continue to support our partners in the search for the missing man.

“Our investigation is to establish the exact circumstances under which the boat capsized, it is still afloat but at this time we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances or third party involvement.

“We will endeavor to provide you with any further updates as we receive them.”

A spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service added: “Our crews are on the scene working with the Coastguard, Surrey Police and other agencies.

“Five people were rescued and work is underway to locate the sixth.”

South East Coast Ambulance said it sent crews to Sunbury Lock after receiving an alert of a “number of people in distress”.

“Ambulance crews, including our hazardous area response team, attended the scene along with police and fire services,” a spokesman for Surrey Live said.

“Five people were evacuated to safety, three of whom were taken to St. Peter for further research.”

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted to a small boat that capsized at around 08:51 today at Sunbury Lock near Wheatleys Eyot.

“Our crews are on site working with the Coastguard, Surrey Police and other agencies. Five people were rescued, and the search for the sixth is ongoing.

“Please avoid the area at this time.”
