An unidentified person escaped injury but still required firefighters’ help after falling into an open ventilation shaft in Centertown on Saturday afternoon.

A grate covering a ventilation shaft next to a building near the intersection of Bank and Maclaren streets became dislodged and was also at the bottom of the shaft, allowing a person to fall 3 to 5 feet below ground level, a social media post from the Ottawa Fire Service said.

Firefighters set up a ladder and sent a rescuer down to help the person get out of the ventilation shaft, the post added.

According to the Ottawa Fire Department, the grate was re-secured to cover the shaft.
