MIAMI – The Coast Guard released video Saturday showing a recent rescue at sea northeast of Key West.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Miami found two people clinging to what remained of the 32-foot vessel as it began taking on water on Friday. The footage shows a Coast Guard crew pulling them into a helicopter at night.

Friday’s rescue was an example of why mariners must “routinely become familiar” with their navigation equipment, according to Petty Officer 1st Class Brian O’Neal, a Coast Guard watchman at Key West.

“The Coast Guard Auxiliary provides free training to individuals in a variety of safe boating techniques, including the use of marine global positioning systems,” O’Neal said in a statement.

Key West Sector Coast Guard watchdogs first received reports of a damaged vessel 14 miles south of Marco Island around 4:15 p.m., but during a search the crew found it about 55 miles northeast of Key West.

The Coast Guard rescued a man Thursday after finding him tied to a reefer 30 miles off Longboat Key. The man was on a damaged boat Wednesday afternoon and disappeared before Hurricane Milton hit.

The Coast Guard recently found a man whose 36-foot sailboat was disabled off the coast of Sanibel Island by the approach of Hurricane Helene. The man was holding his dog when he was rescued by Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater.
