Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders reveal ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ almost didn’t air | Celebrity News | Showbiz and television

According to Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders, the BBC series ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ almost didn’t make it to air. The discovery was shared exclusively with The Mirror, which interviewed the cast and creators.

The cast was last seen together during the film version of “Absolutely Fabulous,” which was released in 2016. It was first broadcast in 1992 on BBC Two.

Speaking to the publication, it can be said that the comedy show almost didn’t even start because Robin Nash, the BBC’s head of comedy, wasn’t an original fan.

When asked what he thought of the pilot, he replied, “I never thought women drinking was funny.”

Fortunately, audiences liked the pilot episode in the fall of 1991. Producer Jon Plowman said: “In my mind, it was forever the sight of Ben Elton that ended and Ben said, ‘Well, I’ve seen the future of comedy and that’s it.’

Moreover, Joanna Lumley almost didn’t play her iconic role of Patsy Stone.

The British comedy series centers on Eddy (Jennifer) and her best friend Patsy (Joanna) and follows their decadent lifestyle while bringing their family along for the ride.

Joanna recalls: “I called my agent and said, ‘Listen, I don’t think Jennifer wants me, but she’s too polite to say anything. Do you think you can get me out of this? And my agent said, “No, it’s a pilot, just do it.” It may not start. I almost wasn’t Patsy!”

She spoke more about this moment to Rob Brydon on his podcast. Reminiscing about her early years as an actress, she then referred to reading the script and said that it was Jennifer’s husband, Ade Edmonson, who “suggested” Joanna for the role in the film “Ab Fab”.

“I was on Ruby Wax. Jennifer said she saw me on Ruby Wax and thought I’d be good – it doesn’t matter. I saw the script and thought it was fantastic,” she explained.

“I was taken to the BBC to meet her (Jennifer) and read a bit of the scene. I have to say – either I did it so badly or she was so uncommunicative – that I was sure she wouldn’t like it.

“I came home and told my agent, ‘I really like the script, but I have to say, you have to get me out of this. She’s too polite to say she doesn’t like me. And I don’t think I can do it. do it. “She doesn’t want me.”
