More than 10 people were trapped, 11 rescued in a gold mine in Colorado

More than 10 people were trapped and 11 others were rescued after being caught 300 meters underground at the Mollie Kathleen gold mine in Teller County, Colorado, Scripps News Colorado Springs reports.

The sheriff’s office said an equipment failure trapped people in the mine. Emergency crews, including the Colorado Springs Fire Department, responded to the scene after being called around 1:30 p.m. local time.

The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine closed in the 1960s, but has since hosted tours, which, according to the mine’s website, have remained popular over the years.

Tour operators say revenue from the tours goes at least in part to maintain security at the facility that hosts seasonal hiking tours.

Mine tours last from May to the second weekend of October, say the organizers. Scripps News Colorado Springs reported that it was not immediately clear whether all or some of those trapped or rescued were there during the trip.
