A former Jackson police officer has pleaded not guilty to murder charges

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A former Jackson police officer accused of killing a man earlier this year has been indicted by a Hinds County grand jury.

Marcus Johnson was charged with first-degree murder and shooting into the apartment. On October 8, 2024, he pleaded not guilty.

Johnson was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Carlos Collins on April 9 at the Tapestry Apartments. Johnson was captured in Louisiana on April 10 after a pursuit from Vicksburg. The chase began on Interstate 20.

According to Detective Tommy Brown, Johnson worked for the Jackson Police Department (JPD) for eight months in 2013. He was separated from JPD until disciplinary action was taken, which led to his immediate termination. Brown said Johnson resigned just before being terminated.

Johnson’s trial is scheduled for March 10, 2025.
