HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 71-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a fatal hit-and-run in Hilo is now out of prison.

Carlton Inada spent a year behind bars and, under the terms of his plea agreement, must now serve four years of probation.

In October 2023, Inada hit and killed Barbara Klein, a 79-year-old aikido instructor on a recumbent tricycle.

In exchange for pleading guilty to negligent homicide, prosecutors dropped the charge of leaving the scene of the incident, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Inada must also undergo a mental health evaluation and submit to electronic monitoring.
