(Across the country) 20-year-olds who left only a newborn in a baby’s crate… guilty of negligence

A single mother in her twenties who left her newborn baby in a baby cot without any advice has been given a suspended prison sentence.

The Wonju Division of the Chunju District Court sentenced 27-year-old A, who was charged with child abandonment and neglect, to eight months in prison and two years’ probation and ordered him to attend 40 hours of lectures on child abuse prevention.

Mr. A abandoned his son in a baby box in Gwanak-gu, Seoul early on June 2 last year and appeared in court.

Mr. A claimed that he could not raise the child because he was in a difficult financial situation and did not inform the biological father about the birth, but he did not immediately notify the appropriate institution about it by ringing the bell while seeking advice or entrusting the child.

The court found him guilty of abandoning the children, who are infants and newborns, without following legal adoption procedures, but made the ruling taking into account the fact that they were first-time offenders and that the victim was currently undergoing normal adoption procedures.

The court is guilty of leaving the baby in a baby bed unless the newborn’s life is in danger, for example, consult the appropriate agencies first.
