Platform 2 Ending Explained: Discussing what happened and what it all means

One of the most attractive thingsPlatform was that it boasted a simple plot complemented by an intriguing socio-economic message that was relatively easy to understand. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if approx Platform 2 the ending left some viewers scratching their heads after watching the film with a Netflix subscription.

Co-writer-director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s new 2024 Netflix original film, the sequel to his hit Spanish-language feature debut, shows more of the world of The Pit, a vertically stacked prison that feeds its inhabitants from a descending platform once a day, one cell at a time. once, leaving little or nothing for the lower levels. I have previously analyzed the meaning of the original Platform ending, but what is its meaning Platform 2 and how does it connect to the acclaimed Netflix thriller that precedes it? To find out, let’s dive deep into the darkness of The Pit once again.

What will happen at the end of Platform 2?

The beginning of the end of the new movie 2024, Platform 2takes place when Perempuán (Milena Smit) loses her arm and her other cellmate, Sahabat (Natalia Tena). These were the consequences of allowing her former cellmate, Zamatian (Hovik Keuchkerian), to eat more of the Platform than she had planned, and helping to organize a coup against the ruthless “loyalist” leader, Dagin Babi (Óscar Jaenada). The following month, she and her newest cellmate, Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor), join a group of “Barbarians” to rebel against the loyalists, leading Perempuán to focus on her main goal: escape.

At Sahabat’s cryptic suggestion, at the end of the month, Perempuán eats part of a painting of a drowning dog, poisoning her enough to appear dead as the administration begins the process of transferring prisoners and removing the deceased. She wakes up, tied to a pile of dead bodies floating in a state of weightlessness, and begins to discreetly leave until she notices a young, innocent boy who has just been placed in a cell.

Perempuán risks his life to bring the boy to the bottom of the Abyss so that the Platform can transport him to the top. She succeeds, but, as another woman she then meets, declares, her journey is over, prompting her to join the rest on the ground floor, where their afterlife appears to be.

The end credits are accompanied by glimpses of other adult prisoners who follow Perempuán’s footsteps, bringing other children to the bottom of The Pit, including Goreng (Iván Massagué), a reminder of the ending of the original Platform. However, the scene picks up where the previous film left off, with Perempuán emerging from the darkness to hug Goreng and ask, “What are you doing here?”

Platform 2 explains how anarchy took over

The appearance of Trimagasi, who died in Platformthis is the first hint that the sequel is in fact a prequel, further confirmed by Perempuán’s reunion with Goreng, who also appears to be her ex-boyfriend that she mentioned. While the new sci-fi film convincingly positions itself as a sequel to the 2020 original, it makes even more sense to learn that its events took place before that.

Beginning Platform 2 establishes an unofficial law regarding the perfectly even distribution of meals among inmates, which was invented by an unseen (and possibly imaginary) messianic figure called “The Master” and enforced by “Anointed Ones” such as Dagin Babi and their loyalist armies. However, by the end, the defeat of the loyalists against the barbarians makes the law a thing of the past.

This is a perfect throwback to the original film, in which the people of Pit save as much as possible from the feast on the Platform, disregarding the obvious need to divide the food evenly. In other words, although the barbarians got what they wanted – the right to eat what they wanted, not just their intended portions – it would have a terrible side effect on future prisoners.

Fighting for more than food

The food served from the Platform in the original film was a metaphor for the unevenly divided community in a capitalist economy. It remains the same in Platform 2 but the story develops from this Darwinian commentary, focusing on a new symbolic focal point, as depicted in the conflict between the loyalists and the barbarians.

Loyalists’ strict enforcement of equal food distribution (which includes throwing away any meals intended for senior prisoners who have died) is seen as oppressive in the eyes of the barbarians, especially when sneaking in a snack literally costs you an arm or worse. That being said, despite the consequences of their actions as seen in the first Platformit’s easy to see why they choose to rebel.

What is happening is shockingly brutal, but in fact it is not very different from situations that occur every day in modern democratic societies. This war seems to represent conflicts between those who act in the service of their community (loyalists) and those who prioritize their own individual freedoms (barbarians), regardless of its larger consequences. For example, the debate in the time of Covid-19 between those who support a mask mandate to limit the spread of the virus and those who believe the order violates their rights.

Given that the Barbarian victory results in anarchy, history Platform 2 ultimately seems to favor the loyalist message, despite their fascist politics and the fact that our hero is part of the rebellion. On the other hand, in my opinion, Perempuán does not represent either side of the main conflict in the film, but something else.

Perempuán’s quest for redemption

Platform 2 covers many topics, from the already mentioned debate on individual freedom to religious fanaticism. However, at its core, it is a story about self-forgiveness, which is what Perempuán strives for through his involvement in The Pit.

Flashbacks to her pre-interview reveal that she is a successful artist who was scheduled to meet her then-boyfriend’s son at a showing of her sculpture of a sharp-clawed dog, even though she chose not to place security barricades around it despite its potentially dangerous design. Unfortunately, the boy’s son accidentally stumbled upon the installation and was mortally impaled, causing her to feel a sense of guilt that she hoped a stay in the Abyss could heal.

Her chance for redemption finally comes when she discovers that the young boy has been placed in Limbo. She selflessly foils an attempt to escape to save him, fatally succumbing to two painful head injuries and starvation in the process. At least she can say, like Goreng and others at the grassroots level, that she is at peace.

Could we see more of this dystopian film series in Platform 3? Nothing has been confirmed yet, but given its current popularity, perhaps one day more secrets and parables hidden in the depths of the Abyss will come to light.
