Officials celebrate Midwest League champion Lake County captains

Lake County commissioners recently offered “official congratulations” to Lake County captains after the Cleveland Guardians High-A affiliate won its second Midwest League title in franchise history.

The Captains, who boasted a 77-53 season record, triumphed over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers last month with a 9-4 victory at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake, marking a “sensational end to an exciting championship run.”

After the defeat in the first match of the series, the Captains gathered their strength and won the last two games in the best-of-three set on their home court.

The victory was fueled by a five-run sixth inning highlighted by key contributions from right fielder Jonah Advincula, reliever Angel Genao and first baseman Ralphy Velazquez.

Officials noted that in honor of the team’s achievement, the Lake County Courthouse was lit blue following the achievement.

“As a community, we celebrate not only the success of the Captains, but also the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship they represent,” said Lake County Commissioner John Plecnik. “This illumination is a symbolic gesture of our pride and support for the team and our commitment to fostering community spirit.”

Commissioner Richard Regovich noted that the championships are a testament to the work of the talented athletes and coaches who worked tirelessly throughout the season.

“Their sacrifice inspires us all and we hope this celebration will shine a light on their hard work and determination.”

Commissioner John Hamercheck added: “Community events like this unite us. We encourage everyone to reflect on the Captains’ extraordinary achievements.”

Another highlight of the team’s successful year is the fact that Jen Yorko is the first female general manager to win a minor league championship.

Yorko, a 2007 graduate of Lake Erie College, began her Minor League Baseball career with the Captains later that year.

During her tenure, she oversaw ticket sales, merchandise sales, event planning, theme nights, school programs and captains’ charity events.

In 2016, Yorko began serving as deputy CEO and was promoted to CEO in 2019.
