The former head coach says the Texas A&M Aggies are in the “driver’s seat” for the SEC title

Texas A&M Aggies fans try not to trash their team by ignoring the media hype, but a five-game winning streak and a 3-0 start to SEC play make it almost impossible not to briefly mention conference title hopes.

College Football Hall of Famer Steve Spurrier now joins the conversation. The former South Carolina and Florida head coach expressed confidence in Texas A&M’s SEC title chances during the appearance Another Dooley Noted podcast.

“I would guess there could be a championship game where both teams suffer at least one loss,” Spurrier told On3. “Texas A&M is currently in the driver’s seat as far as the conference is concerned, I think without any loss. Almost everyone has it now.

Texas A&M’s remaining season schedule certainly gives the team a real chance to get to the SEC Championship and potentially qualify for the College Football Playoffs even with another potential loss at some point. The Aggies’ toughest games against the LSU Tigers and Texas Longhorns will be in College Station, while the final three road games against Mississippi State (Oct. 19), South Carolina (Nov. 2) and Auburn (Nov. 23) are matchups favoring Texas A&M.

According to the ESPN College Football Playoff Predictor, the Aggies currently have a 33% chance of advancing to the CFP, which ranks them 15th in the country.

If Texas A&M takes care of business to the end and suffers a second potential loss at the hands of either Texas or LSU, the Aggies will have a real chance to get to the SEC title game. Even if Texas A&M loses in the conference championship, first place in CFP program history will be in sight.

No. 15 Texas A&M will complete its bye week and face Mississippi State on October 19.
