Bombay: A doctor at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, where Baba Siddique was taken after he was shot, said the former Maharashtra minister likely died before he was transferred to a medical facility.

Siddique was unconscious when he was rushed to Lilavati Hospital on Saturday evening after he was shot. Doctors tried for almost two hours to save him, but in vain, he added.

NCP leader Baba Siddique (66) was attacked by three men in Kher Nagar in Mumbai’s Bandra district, just outside the office of his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique, and shot dead on Saturday evening. He was taken to Lilavati Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Speaking to reporters after the incident on Saturday evening, doctors at the medical facility said: “He had two gunshot wounds in the front of his chest. There was a lot of blood loss and he was unconscious when his family took him to the hospital.”

Asked if Baba Siddique died before being taken to the hospital, one of the doctors replied: “It’s possible. When he was brought in, he received no response. He was unconscious. We performed CPR, but Siddique was pronounced dead at 11:27 p.m. on Saturday.”

Doctors said they spent almost two hours trying to save his life. The KPK leader was first taken to the emergency department and then transferred to the ICU. They said there was no heartbeat.

Doctors said that if there were other injuries the KPK leader might have suffered, an autopsy would reveal the exact number and nature of the wounds. “We didn’t have time to check how many gunshot wounds there were. The autopsy will reveal further details,” they said.
