Hear the story of Hibs’ oldest fan

Martinez himself came from Belize to help Britain’s war effort, one of almost 900 forestry workers who came to Scotland from British Honduras – now known as Belize – during the Second World War. Until recently, their history was largely forgotten.

Martinez was the last surviving lumberjack and had supported Hibs since his arrival in Edinburgh. In 2016, at the age of 106, just before his death, Sam Martinez shared his memories, including Easter Road’s Scottish Cup win that year.

This is his story, and that of men like him who traveled 5,000 miles from Central America to help Britain’s war effort.
