Nearly $60 million awarded to the City of Cleveland to support development of the North Coast Connector

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the City of Cleveland nearly $60 million to build the North Coast Connector.

Officials say the money comes from the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant program.

According to the city’s announcement, the funding will support the reconstruction of sections of SR 2 into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard.

Officials confirmed that this is part of Mayor Bibb’s “Shore-to-Core-to-Shore” initiative to connect downtown Cleveland to the waterfront.

Officials say the first phase includes demolition of the Main Avenue Bridge between West 9th Street and Eriesside Avenue, construction of a widened, pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly West 3rd Bridge and development of a new Shoreway Boulevard from West 3rd Street to West 9th Street.

The funding comes from Sen. Sherrod Brown, who officials say has advocated for support from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
