“Black Boy” confesses to killing a sugar cane picker

THIRTY-YEAR-OLD Donald Grovesnor, known as ‘The Black Boy’, accused of murdering a man, is now awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.

During his arraignment before Justice Navindra Singh at the Demerara High Court, he pleaded guilty to the charges.

He confessed that in March 2019 in Demerara County, he unlawfully killed 29-year-old Suraj Jailalla alias “Neshal”, a sugarcane picker from Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

Justice Singh adjourned sentencing until October 30, 2024, to hear the probation and other social impact reports. Grovesnor remains in custody.

The case is being handled by solicitors Muntaz Ali, Madana Rampersaud and Christopher Belfield.

According to The Guyana Chronicle, on March 3, 2019, the duo were drinking at a shop in their Sisters Village community when an argument broke out between them.

Some time later, Grovesnor reportedly accosted Jailall, but later released him and returned home. However, the man returned with a cutlass and struck Jailall a fatal blow before fleeing.

Jailall died the following day at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH).
He was reportedly hit in the head.

Reports indicate that the victim cut off part of his ear. The incident is believed to have occurred following an argument between the two people in February 2019.
